So I did what every other self-respecting geek would do–I googled xbox 360 vs playstation 3. I was hoping to get a few objective reviews based on facts and reality. No luck there. Every single review I watched was biased. Most were annoyingly biased. Next, I tried to go to YouTube and do the same thing. 10 minutes into it, I just had to quit because I was getting angry at just how ludicrous most of the videos were. I had to sit back, close my eyes and rub my temples. I was completely mind raped by the misinformation flowing from the net like a sea of poisonous radioactive waste.

REPOST: Why I Went With WordPress vs. MovableType (0)

April 1st, 2008 by Emil in Software, Wordpress

To be frank, I have attempted this whole blogging thing before, but I could never stick with it. In the past I have used WordPress (WP) exclusively as my blog publishing platform. I was reasonably happy with it. Everything worked reasonably well and the community was second to none. The only (sort of) negative thing in my view were the frequent updates. Now, don’t get me wrong; I like my software secure and fresh as much as the next guy, but the vulnerabilities kept being discovered and patches kept being made. I’m not really complaining, just noticing. I assume that some people may perceive frequent updates to be a bother. continue reading »

Hello, WordPress 2.5! (0)

March 29th, 2008 by Emil in Wordpress

While this wasn’t very surprising on the grand scheme of things, I was still a bit put off by the news when I read it in my favorite RSS software–NewsFire (Mac only).

That’s right, WordPress 2.5 is out and all the 2.5 RC2 testing I did was all for nothing but the fun of it. Great, I don’t mind!

Anyway, everything in yesterday’s post still applies. Keep in mind that wp-content is not to be deleted. In fact, if you somehow manage to delete it, make sure you restore it from backup before attempting the upgrade. If you accidentally delete your default theme, you will be greeted by the “white screen of death.” In order to remedy this, simply go into http://yourblog/wp-admin and select a different theme.

Stream of consciousness…

Remember when MySpace was the only big game in town? Many of your friends had profiles full of tasty information. Perhaps you studied your friends’ profiles in–let’s just say–painstaking detail. You may have even found out information about your friends that you didn’t know. They put stuff online which they didn’t even tell you in person. They put it all online for everyone to see. Weird, huh? continue reading »

Testing WordPress 2.5 RC2 (0)

March 28th, 2008 by Emil in General

As of today at 4:30PM EST, this blog is running on the second release candidate of WordPress 2.5. On the 26th of this month, Matt Mullenweg posted a short screencast of WP 2.5’s new features. This screencast inspired me to give the new version a try. On a side note, I hope Matt gets better in his dental situation (watch the screencast for more info). continue reading »

Linux File System Summary (0)

January 19th, 2008 by Emil in Linux

As you probably know in Ubuntu everything is under the root or /. All drives that you will ever use will start with /. That doesn’t mean that they’re not segregated from your OS and application stuff.

Let’s say you have 3 drives. You have one drive house the / paritition. Within that, you can have another drive house the /home partition, and yet another the /media/files partition. If your / drive somehow dies, you still have the /home and /media/files housing drives intact! You can simply reinstall the OS and get back to work. The point I’m trying to make is that while it seems that everything in Ubuntu is a single drive, is may only seem this way. continue reading »

Linux Partitions — They Make Sense! (0)

January 19th, 2008 by Emil in CLI, Linux

90% of computer users use Windows. In Windows the command line is largely foregone in favour of GUI (graphical user interface) tools like ‘Computer Management’ and just right-clicking on everything and selecting ‘Properties.’ While Linux (a.k.a. GNU/Linux) has about as many GUI tools intended for administration, it is much more convenient and consistent to use a single tool–the command line interface (CLI). continue reading »
